It’s been a long time since I’ve posted something here. And I think the two most important changes in my life to note right now are that I graduated in May from Pitt with my B.A. in English Writing and that I am currently seeking my M.A.T., also hopefully from Pitt.
When I first came to Pitt back in the fall of 2006, teaching was something that I was very interested in. However, I never pursued the idea seriously until after graduation. When it came time to find a job in that tough field of journalism, I realized that I wasn’t quite ready to pack up my life and move somewhere and that I still wanted more out of my education. The more I thought about it, the more my mind kept falling on the idea of teaching.
I’ve always enjoyed helping others and many people have told me that they think I would make a good teacher. Because of that, I enrolled in post-bacc studies this fall and into the spring, fulfilling prerequisites for Pitt’s MAT program that I failed to take while an undergraduate student. I also got in touch with my old principal at Hampton High School and told him that I was hoping to become a high school English teacher and was currently looking for tutoring positions in that area. He was extremely helpful, passed my information and credentials on to Hampton’s guidance counselors and in less than a day I had tutoring prospects. I’m currently tutoring a homebound freshman and I’m really enjoying it — and that’s a good start if I’m going to make this a career.
So with all of this, my blog is going to make a little turn. While journalism still lies in my heart — and I’ve really missed writing pieces on a regular basis — teaching is quickly going to take over my life. I’m going to now have posts that focus on education, whether it’s news stories, commentary, funding or anything that has to do with teaching.
